How to Get Rid Of a Salvage Title

I live in San Jose, California. A few years back my car got hit by a lorry and received a lot of damages. It was then that I found out that if a vehicle receives damages worth 75% or more of its market value, it is given a salvage title. Some states also give salvage titles to vehicles that are stolen and found again. I became curious if one can get rid of a salvage title.

I got to know that although the designation of 'salvage' to a car can never be removed from its title, you can get your vehicle a rebuilt title or a rebuilt salvage title. I decided to do that before selling it to a dealer who would then resell it in a salvage car auction. To get a rebuilt title, you have to get your salvage car completely repaired and pass an inspection by the state. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to do that:

Documentation

You need to hand in a few documents with your application for a rebuilt title. When you are getting the damages repaired, keep the receipts for all the replacement parts as well as all the repair services you are getting. You will also need to note the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) of the cars you are getting the replacement parts from.

Forms

When all the damages to the vehicle are repaired, you can go to your state's department of motor vehicles. They will require you to fill out a few forms before they inspect your car. Most of the states require pictures of the damaged vehicle and parts certification form along with the rebuilt title application.

Inspection

There are state-approved inspectors that you can schedule the inspection of your vehicle. You will have to arrange for a legal way to take it to the inspection location as you are not yet allowed to drive it.

Get the Title

If your car passes the inspection, you can submit the proof and papers to your state's title department along with the fee to receive the rebuilt title and you can then legally drive it anywhere you want.

Buying a salvage vehicle for sale from a salvage car auction or getting your own salvage car repaired and inspected so you can drive it legally is easy and beneficial. A few simple and cost-effective repairs, and you can use the car or sell it for a profit.
